20/20 in 2020
December 2020
Dr. Safran,
Thank you for performing a "miracle" and giving me the best vision I have ever had in my life. I have been wearing glasses since I was 5 years old, and because you accepted my difficult cataract case when others would not, I no longer need glasses.
I required several laser procedures, making me a greater risk than most patients. By the time I came to see you I was blind in my right eye due to scaring from recurring inflammation. You operated on me and were able to resolve several issues in that eye in 31 minutes, and topped it off with a Toric lens to correct my astigmatism. I had vision in my right eye before I was wheeled out of the operating room. My left eye was corrected a month later and is 20/20!
All the best to you and your staff.
You have my eternal gratitude and recommendation.
Sincerely,
Kathy M.
Top Australian judge flies to U.S. for eye surgery from N.J. doctor

LAWRENCE - Trenton Times, April 7, 2017
Dr. Steven G. Safran, left, American Board Certified, Fellowship-trained Cornea Specialist, does a follow-up visit with John Henry Pascoe, right, Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, who came all the way from Australia specifically to have Dr. Safran perform the surgery. (Michael Mancuso | For NJ.com)
Veteran eye doctor Dr. Steven Safran says he often feels a little nervous the night before a significant surgery.
So the Lawrence ophthalmologist has a pre-op routine that includes meditation. "But at some point you don't really worry about who the patient is," he said.
That was the case Monday when Safran operated on John Pascoe, Chief Judge on Australia's Federal Circuit Court, who flew around the world to see if Safran could restore the vision to his left eye.
"You have to remind yourself that this is who you are and this is what you do," Safran said, reflecting on the operation Wednesday, which was a success.
Pascoe, who was having recurring problems with his left eye, heard about Safran from his Australian doctor who had seen teaching videos that Safran posted online to help prospective ophthalmology students.
With that, he got in touch with Safran, who said he was up for the task - and not long after the judge was on a 25-hour plane trip from Sydney.
But after it wasn't until the judge arrived that the task really sank in, Safran said.
Pascoe had suffered a detached retina years ago a surgery about 10 years ago to put a lens in his eye used silicon.
"Which caused a whole series of problems," Pascoe said Friday at Safran's office for a post-op visit.
His eye became really clouded, causing obvious vision problems, and eventual blindness.
Safran said was calcified. "It looked like a gravel pit," he said. "He couldn't see through it and we couldn't see through it."
To remove the lens and insert a new one would involve techniques that, if they went wrong, could tear the part of the eye surrounding the lens, Safran said.
"I would not get a chance to do anything to fix anything," Safran said. He said removing the lens was like pulling overcooked lobster out of its shell.
Safran knew before Pascoe awoke the surgery worked. The judge wasn't able to speak immediately after but Safran talked to him anyway. "I said it was worth the trip."
On Friday, Pascoe agreed: "It was a journey that was well worthwhile."
For Safran, the judge's operation was "like winning the lottery."
"This is the closest I'll ever get to knowing how it feels to win the Super Bowl, but to me this is bigger because you're doing it for someone else," Safran said. "The faith he put in me and the trip he made, made it that much better."

Dear Dr. Safran,
Thank you very much for the marvelous job that you did removing cataracts from both eyes and correcting my vision. Your skill in surgery is outstanding and in addition I deeply appreciate your kindness, generosity and the way you made me feel so comfortable throughout the entire process.
I am so pleased that my son Eli recommended you as my surgeon. May G-d reciprocate the kindness that you show others and may you be blessed with good health so that you can continue to help others for many years to come.
Sincerely

To My Wonderful Husband
I just retyped these testimonials word for word; I picked a few from hundreds of thank you cards that we have posted in the office and on file. I actually had tears in my eyes typing them, they were so touching. The testimonials reflect how dedicated you are to your patients and to your profession. You are ethical and honest and do your absolute best for all your patients! You take patient care to the next level, giving up your free weekend time to go in if a patient has an emergency, answering phone calls yourself, paying attention to even the smallest of concerns and willing to give of yourself so much for others. You read countless journals, attend seminars, give lectures, and do research, so you can stay ahead of the curve. Most of all our vacations are centered around Ophthalmology Meetings. It’s fun for me because I get to see other interesting places but all you get to see is the inside of a convention building. However, you seem to be recharged by the day’s activities and the knowledge you keep acquiring. You have endless energy and sublimate it to the highest degree. Your passions are your work, physical fitness, golf and of course your family. Even after a long day at the office you still have time for a catch with the boys, a baseball game, a rock concert, movies or a show and dinner. Your family loves you, your patients love you and we are all so proud of you. Our son Jordan wants to be an Ophthalmologist just like his Dad. You are a wonderful husband and role model for your children.
Your loving wife Lisa and your sons, Max, Jordan and Liam.

Dear Dr. Safran,
We continue to be impressed by your skillful and awe-inspiring surgery, and I thought you might like to have an update on Jim's progress since you saw him post-operatively on Friday January 13th. Jim saw Dr. Prum at the University of Virginia last Tuesday, and the pressure in the left eye was still six, even though you had taken him off Xalatan. However, at Friday's appointment, it was 20, so he was restarted on Azopt, which he was taking before the December surgery. On Tuesday, the left eye was refracted to about 20/40 and on Friday at 20/20 and is quite stable. Dr. Prum will see him again this Friday.
Dr. Prum and some of the technicians had watched the surgery that you posted on youtube with admiration and awe, and we eagerly watched it with similar feelings. Again, we thank you for your careful attention and great skill. Jim looks forward to many years of philosophical and, thanks to you and your kind and professional staff, physiologic vision.
Best regards,
Sarah C.
p.s. And thanks to your wife, who asked the important question that led to your decision to do the delicate and elegant rotation and repair rather than replacement.

Dear Steve:
I am now able to report that my "starbursts" and " lens flairing" from headlights, street lights, etc are now a thing of the past!!
I remain profoundly grateful to you first as a great humanitarian for being willing to help me. And I remain profoundly grateful to you for your unsurpassed technical skill as an eye surgeon.
As you may have known I work very closely with pioneer Apollo astronauts, and more specifically with men who walked on the moon
The moonwalkers have always represented a special kind of hero to me. As of this morning, their ranks have swelled by one as you join them!
To me, you represent the ideal of what a doctor should be: not only technically skilled, but also a caring and compassionate human being who sees their patients not as a meal -ticket but as their brother or sister in need of help.
You represent the ideal physician to me... Caring, compassionate, and dedicated to relieving suffering
Thank you! As one who has lived on not just one celestial world but two, I can truly say with authority that you are the best eye surgeon on Earth!
Fondly,
David F.

Dr. Safran,
I'd like say "thank- you" for being my eye doctor. I feel very fortunate I was referred to you. I have had the utmost confidence in your diagnosis, treatment and oversight these many years. When it came to corrective vision treatment I was at ease due to your intelligence, many years of education, training and skill. I thought it was amazing how easy and painless the procedure was for me. Because of you I have much better eyesight. What a joy to be able to read and see details in everything without glasses.
No more frustration when misplacing or forgetting my glasses. In addition, you have a wonderful, thorough and pleasant staff. Looking forward to many more years of being your patient.
Thank You,

I know that I made the right choice in having you care for me
I know that you realize how important perfect vision is to me as an eye surgeon, and I appreciate your expertise
June 2013
I'm writing to let you know that I'm getting along beautifully following your recent corneal surgery on my left eye. The healing was rapid, and I'm pleased to report that I've had had no discomfort and am seeing very well. In fact, I was back in the operating room performing eye surgery six days after your procedure without any difficulty. I know that you realize how important perfect vision is to me as an eye surgeon, and I appreciate your expertise. I know personally most of the eye surgeons in the Delaware Valley, and could have chosen any surgeon to operate on me. I know that I made the right choice in having you care for me. I thank you for your skill, diligence and kindness.
With warmest regards,

A whole new life for her with great eyesight
We wanted to thank you for the amazing surgeries that you have done for our daughter Jessie. We are so blessed with the results. You have given us the miracle that we could have only dreamed of. We know that this was a very complicated and very uncommon procedure that most would not even attempt on such a young person, but you took it on with so much caring and so much time spent researching and consulting with other top eye surgeons. Words can’t totally express how grateful we are. Jessie is so happy and is looking forward to being able to now drive. She will no longer miss out on seeing everything in school either; it is a whole new life for her with great eyesight.
…so much!
Scott, Robin & Jessie
Magnificent work re-doing botched cataract surgery
Dear Dr. Safran,
This is a heartfelt note of gratitude and appreciation for your magnificent work re-doing the botched cataract surgery I was a victim of when using another surgeon. Anyone else might not have wanted to get involved in such a difficult and demanding surgery. Your superb skill aside, it was your commitment to helping me and making sure my vision was enhanced that made all the difference.I will always be grateful to you that you took on the task of literally “undoing”, and then “redoing” someone else’s mistake.I feel very, very lucky to have you as my doctor, and I am doing quite well with my new implant these days.
With the warmest regards,
Sharon

A dedicated professional who takes pride in his patient’s well being
Recently, I had eye surgery performed by an amazing young man, Dr. Steven G. Safran, MD, PA, Eye Physician and Surgeon. As a result my vision has improved greatly and I was privy to a dedicated professional who takes pride in his patient’s well being. I was impressed not only by his surgical skills, but also his genuine concerns for his family and the compassion he shows for his patients. He was recommended to me by a number of friends who were his patients and, for that, I thank them. And, thank you, Dr. Safran, a credit to the medical profession.
I can’t stop telling everyone about you
I can’t stop telling everyone about you if they need eye care or eye surgery
Dear Dr. Safran
How can I ever thank you enough for what you have done for me. Coming to you, with hardly any sight in my right eye, through another doctor’s careless mistake, you have brought my vision back so much in that eye. Then you operated on my left eye removing the cataract, and it’s perfect. Through the surgery you kept assuring me everything is going as it should and that helped so much after the experience I had before. (If I had only known about you before.) I can’t stop telling everyone about you if they need eye care or eye surgery. It’s so hard to put into words how much I appreciate what you have done for me and can’t thank you enough. “You are the best!” Your staff is so helpful and nice too.
Most sincerely,
Ruth
I could read the print and I cried!
Dr. Safran,
Just a note to say thank you from my family and me for giving me back my vision. I’m sure you know my daughters Kathy and Nancy were following my cataract surgery on March 31st; you told them it had been successful! However it wasn’t until the morning of April 2nd when I picked up my daily paper and I could read the print and I cried! I couldn’t believe it! I am so grateful Dr. Shah suggested I see you. Thank you Dr. Safran, you are the greatest!
Sincerely,
Florence
P.S. I only wished that we met sooner
Thank you for my beautiful eyesight
Dear Dr. Safran:
I’m so sorry it has taken me so long to write this thank-you note. I apologize.Last week, I saw Dr. Desai for an eye exam. When he finished, he pushed his chair back, shook his head and said, “Dr. Safran did a beautiful job on both of your eyes — absolutely perfect.” I wholeheartedly agree and I would recommend you to anyone. I was almost blind in my left eye and now my vision is just about perfect in that eye. I only use glasses now to read. I really cannot believe it because it is almost a miracle for me.Once again, thank you for my beautiful eyesight and please extend my thanks to your entire staff for being so nice to me.
Sincerely,
Gail
